Scrubs to Servers: Gearing Up for A Career in Informatics
Date
October 2026
Scrubs to Servers
This assignment is a plan for my pathway for transitioning into a nursing informatics career. I've looked at three different informatics job postings, compared the requirements of each to my own current skill set and experience, and identified skill gaps. I've put together a 3-year plan that details the training, certifications, and hands-on experience that would benefit me as I move from being a clinical nurse to being in a dedicated informatics role.
Competencies developed:
1.2f – Synthesize knowledge from nursing and other disciplines to inform education, practice, and research.
8.1i – Propose a plan to influence the selection and implementation of new information and communication technologies.
10.2i – Foster activities that support a culture of lifelong learning.
10.3k – Influence intentional change guided by leadership principles and theories.
Explanation:
This paper is a career self-assessment and plan, so it draws from a few different domains. Comparing the three informatics job postings and mapping them against my own HST and Epic experience shows me pulling together my clinical knowledge and informatics knowledge into one picture (1.2f). Since all three roles involve input into choosing and setting up EHR systems, and my own background includes HST configuration and Epic go-live work, this also reflects the informatics competency around proposing a plan to guide technology selection and implementation (8.1i). My three-year plan, with its coding course, SQL and Excel training, and NI-BC certification goal, shows me building ongoing learning into my career path (10.2i). And my stated goal of eventually leading a larger optimization project and presenting results to stakeholders shows me working toward leading change using leadership principles (10.3k).
